Monty Williams, happy! (from Fox Sports) |
Monty Williams has agreed to a four year extension with the Hornets, according to The Times-Picayune. Monty Williams is an awesome coach and the Hornets are smart to extend him as their young core comes together and will grow with him. From top to bottom the Hornets are young, dynamic and have some pieces that can really make noise.
Anthony Davis, Eric Gordon, Austin Rivers and an intelligent, former player turned coach? This is a team that has a long way to go, but is certainly intriguing.
Monty Williams needs to continue learning, growing and giving his players clear instructions. Praise for coach Williams that sticks out is when Emeka Okafor talked about how detailed his instructions were from Monty Williams. Okafor knew where to be and when, which is great for a guy like Okafor. A key to Monty Williams success with the current group of players is balancing instinct and the teams playbook.
When coaching Anthony Davis, elements of the game will be much easier to execute than if you’re coaching Emeka Okafor. Coach Williams will understand this and maybe make a few changes to allow the talent the team has to shine its brightest. As the talent increases, so should the freedom the players have to make plays. At the same time, these Hornets are young and need to be taught the right way. That’s no easy task for Monty Williams to conquer.
Monty Williams has the expertise to do it. He’s learned from some of the best, does his homework and tries to put his team in the best position. Best of luck to the Hornets and Monty Williams as they enter a new era!
