South Alabama Beat Central Michigan

In the first game of the Showdown in St. Pete, South Alabama beat Central Michigan 66-64. Despite seven three’s from Central Michigan’s Logan McIntire, South Alabama’s 1-3-1 zone defense stifled Central Michigan’s offense.

Neither team was able to get much separation from the other. South Alabama’s defensive rotations made it tough for Central Michigan to find offensive flow. Nathan Claerbaut, a seven footer for Central Michigan, posted a double-double, and made an impact, but working the ball inside and out more would’ve helped CMU.

The most exciting play of the day was an offensive rebound, dunk, plus the foul from Stephen Williams. Adam Olsen faked a three, side stepped, took a three, which Williams rebounded, gathered, and went up strong with right after! Rodney Johnson Jr. tried to challenge Williams at the rim, but he couldn’t stop him.

The last two minutes of each half favored Central Michigan, who was plus five in that department. Despite closing stronger than Southern Alabama in each half, South Alabama was able to make enough shots and free throws to create enough of a lead.

Central Michigan took 44 three’s to just 20 for South Alabama, but Central Michigan only hit 14 of their three’s. Central Michigan was close despite their bad overall shooting, forcing a few more turnovers would’ve helped them get better looks.

South Alabama’s whole staff was really engaged and exuberant throughout the game. They chanted defense (which Central Michigan did too, at times), got up anytime someone scored, and brought a ton of energy behind their ball club.

Overall the game was exciting, fast paced, and an awesome back and forth (watch the full game here). There’s no question the rest of the Showdown in St. Pete will be the same!
